black sterling silver
In general, oxidized silver jewelry should not be cleaned with jewelry cleaning dips or aggressive polishing that will strip the blackened surface.
Keep your S.A.M.A. jewelry radiant with a few easy tips.
It is possible that silver jewelry may turn black. If this happens, you can clean your jewelry with a clay stone (or silver stone) or with a Sunshine polishing cloth.
Bronze Jewelry
Bronze is composed of 90% copper and can oxidize, causing it to tarnish or blacken. To protect your bronze jewelry from oxidation:
- Remove your bronze jewelry before showering, exercising, or doing the dishes.
- Store it in its box when not in use.
- If your jewelry oxidizes and you do not like its new patina, you can clean it with a Sunshine polishing cloth.
Brass, Copper, & Bronze
These metals also change color over time. The bright gold color of brass can be restored with a homemade paste made from vinegar and salt. Clean by rubbing the paste on the jewelry parts to get a nice shine. However, you can also let your brass jewelry age gracefully.
Bronze jewelry changes color due to oxidation, a natural process where bronze reacts with oxygen in the air. This color change can be more rapid with exposure to water, sweat, and humidity.
Cleaning Tips:
- Marseille soap: Rub your bronze jewelry with Marseille soap, rinse well, and dry.
- Toothpaste: Rub the jewelry with a little toothpaste, rinse well, and dry.
- Varnish and Beeswax: Use beeswax to protect and clean jewelry. Apply a thin layer and spread with a soft cloth until no longer sticky.
Wearing your jewelry regularly can help keep it clean. For solid copper jewelry, it is wash-and-wear safe, but avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals which can damage softer gemstones.
Cleaning Methods for Copper Jewelry:
- Lemon and Salt: Wet the piece with lemon juice, sprinkle with salt, rub with a soft cloth or fingers, rinse, and dry. Apply Renaissance Wax for a protective finish.
- Ketchup: Apply ketchup with an old toothbrush, rub lightly, rinse clean, and dry. The acid in the ketchup dissolves tarnish. Apply Renaissance Wax for a protective finish.
- Vinegar: Submerge the piece in white vinegar (with a sprinkle of salt if desired), wait several minutes, rinse with cold water, and dry. Apply Renaissance Wax for a protective finish.
- Baking Soda: Make a paste with baking soda, rub on the copper, scrub until oxidation is removed, rinse, dry, and buff with a polishing cloth.
- Polishing Cloth: For an antiqued look with bright highlights, wash with warm soapy water, dry, and buff with a Sunshine polishing cloth or Pro Polish pad. Apply Renaissance Wax to preserve the shine.

PRODUCT CARE
Tobias Wistisen jewelry is handcrafted using oxidized 925 sterling silver and requires proper care. To keep your jewelry in the best condition, follow these recommendations:
SILVER JEWELRY CARE
- Remove your jewelry when washing your hands, showering, at the beach, and in the pool.
- Avoid contact with household products, cosmetics, and any chemicals.
- Avoid rough surfaces.
- Avoid exposing your jewelry to extreme temperatures.
- Store your jewelry separately in a dry environment (jewelry box or pouch).
- Clean your jewelry with soap and warm water (neutral pH), dry with a cloth, or use a polishing cloth.
Over time, exposure to natural elements, daily life products, and the natural pH of the skin can dull 925 sterling silver and fade oxidized silver.
STONES AND DIAMONDS CARE
- Avoid scratching, knocking, or dropping. Diamonds and stones can break, crack, and chip when struck at the right angle and with the right amount of impact.
- Avoid contact with water. Water can infiltrate under stones, causing fogginess and limestone deposits.
LEATHER CARE
- Keep leather items out of water and sunlight. If leather comes in contact with water, wipe it clean with a dry cotton cloth and allow it to air dry.
- We use vegetable-tanned leather, which can become stained after contact with water.
Keep your S.A.M.A. jewelry radiant with a few easy tips.
- Restore diamond or gold shine by using an extra soft toothbrush and mild soap to wash away any residue.
- Organize your pieces with care so that they do not collide, which can result in nicks and scratches.
- Avoid exposing your jewelry to harsh chemical cleansers or alcohol-based perfumes that may affect the finish.
